Angela Kamer

Angela R. Kamer, DDS, MS, PhD

New York University (NYU) College of Dentistry, New York, USA

Is associate professor at the Department of Periodontodlogy and Implant Dentistry, New York University (NYU) College of Dentistry, New York, USA.

Her research activities and competences are in periodontology and implant dntistry and fields of diabetes, cancer research, bone research and alzheimer's disease. After completing her studies in Stomatology at the University "Iuliu Hatieganu" in Cluj Napoca, Romania, and practicing dentistry for a few years, Angela Kamer went on to receive her MS in Oral Sciences, Ph.D. in Pathology and training in Periodontics from SUNY at Buffalo and later in Implant Dentistry from New York University, USA. Subsequently, she started working at NYU College of Dentistry. As a trained periodontist at the College of Dentistry and a research scientist at NYU Center for Brain Health, Angela was in a unique position to bridge the medical-dental research gap by developing new hypotheses and strengthening collaborations across disciplines. Her research focused on the role of peripheral inflammation/infections in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease. Periodontal disease is a peripheral chronic infection affecting about 50% of people over 55 years of age and is characterized by high Gram-negative pathogenic bacterial load and often increased systemic inflammation. Studies coming from Angela’s group will present data showing that periodontal disease may contribute to AD-specific pathology and cognitive performance. She published in well-regarded peer-reviewed journals, she wrote book chapters, and presented to several international conferences. She also co-edited a book and a special journal issue.

Guy Daculsi is Research Director of  INSERM (National Institute for Medical Research) from 1976.
Biologist and chemist, Guy Daculsi created in 1990 the Biomaterials and Calcified Tissue Research center calcified tissues of the University of Nantes and INSERM, based in the Faculty of Dental Surgery.
He is specialized in mineralization process and biological apatite, bone substitute particularly calcium phosphate. Pioneer in this field in France, he developed an original concept of artificial bone, the Biphasic Calcium Phosphate Concept, and was the designer of several types of Bioceramics, for bone regeneration in Orthopedic and Dental Maxillofacial.
His team consisted of engineers, biologists, chemists, dentists, doctors and veterinarians, has developed a theme of original research relevant to the physio-pathology of calcified tissues at the level of mineral phases, particularly on the degradation and dissolution by specialized cells. These studies and models developed are closely associated with the design, development and study of mineral phases used as synthetic bone substitutes and dental.
Pioneer for osteoinductive and osteogenic bioceramics, he participated in several European and International  research programs on new tissue engineering technologies, bone regenerative medicine, and template for release of bioactive agents.
In collaboration with industry biomaterials, this work has led to many patents and marketing of several implantable medical devices.

As member of the research team of the Clinic, she has been involved in national and international research projects and clinical trials studying modern aspects of orthopaedic practice, all these completing the observational research activity based on the numerous clinical cases operated in the Clinic. The most significant aspects derived from this sustained practice were published or presented in more than 100 papers accepted in journals, national and international medical conferences, reflecting the interest for challenging issues in orthopaedic surgery, including biomaterials, endoprosthesis, bone substitutes, as these represent current methods used by the team she works with. She has been invited speaker in national and international congresses, and, as AO Faculty, in basic and advanced courses of this prestigious orthopaedic organization. As member of several orthopaedic associations, Prof.Dr. Lupescu is focused on making more visible the experience of Romanian orthopaedists, as well as on stimulating the young trainees to improve their knowledge according to the international guidelines and standards.

The cornerstone of the scientific and surgical activity is represented by the essential scientific research, but mostly by the personal research activity, materialized as a doctoral thesis named „Therapeutic and diagnostic algorithm for revision surgery of femoral component aseptic loosening in total hip arthroplasty”. Later on, the establishment of an important translational research project, with a major economical and scientific influence, financed by EU - POSCCE, with the acronym MOLIMAGEX and the full name "The development of translational research infrastructure in molecular pathology and imagistics, has led to the expansion of  preoccupation for the bone defects physiopathology" has led to the expansion of  preoccupation for the bone defects physiopathology.
